1 Thessalonians 5:18 “In everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

His name was Trevor. When I knew him he was a teenager. He did something that I have never seen done before. And, he didn’t do it just once, but often. During worship, he would help pass communion and then then the collection plate. Many of us began our service to God this way. You stand in the aisle, and hand the trays to the person sitting on the end. As the trays come down another end, you take them and pass them on to the next row. It’s not hard, but it is something that is important.

Trevor always added something to this when it was his turn to pass the trays. Like everyone else, he stood in silence as folks remembered their Lord. But when it came to the collection plate, as I handed it to him, he would very quietly whisper, “thank you.” He did that every time. I don’t know if he only did that to me or to everyone. I was never sure if he was thanking me for putting in a check or for just handing him the tray. I always took it that he was thanking me for supporting the work and the kingdom.

In more than four decades of being a Christian, no one, other than Trevor, has ever said “Thank you,” when I handed the collection plate to the server. I must admit, when I helped serve, I never said “Thank you,” to anyone. I just did my job in silence. That’s how most of the guys do it. Just silently serve. But that added, “Thank you,” not loud, not drawing attention, just between me and him, was such a special and pleasant surprise. Now, more than a decade later, I still remember that. I thought of Trevor Sunday. I lost track of him and not sure where he is, but in my heart and in my memory is him saying “thank you,” as I handed the collection plate to him.

Now, from this a couple of thoughts.

First, I wonder if God also feels thankful to us. Heaven doesn’t shout it. But there we are on a Sunday. Our hearts are around the dying Savior and His generous salvation that was extended to even us. We sing praises to the God we love. We open His word and drink deeply into the message. We give because we love. We give because we want these things to continue. We give because it’s the right thing to do. Yes, it’s expected. Yes, we are commanded. But still, I wonder if God is thankful that we are doing these things. I want to think so. I want to think that He is pleased with worship. We could be in bed. We could be doing a thousand other things. Even in the church building, our minds and hearts could be filled with worry, stress and all the activities that we need to get done. But there we are, empty of self and full of the Lord and enjoying every moment. I like to think that God whispers, “Thank you.”

Second, obedience is expected, but it’s still nice to have someone recognize it and even compliment it. The worthy servant is only doing what he is supposed to do, we understand that, but it’s sure nice to have someone appreciate the good song leading, the powerful prayer, the passionate sermon, the folks that came, the people that gave. Response is important part of connecting and communicating. We have company over often. When they leave, my wife almost always will ask me about the food. Did I like it? That is important to her. I do the same with my sermons. There are occasions when no one says anything. Was it helpful? Did it stink? Was it any good? Feedback is important.

Thinking about Trevor made me realize that I need to thank the shepherds more than I do. Yes, they are doing what they are supposed to be doing. We’d complain and fuss if they weren’t. But when they are, too often, we just take it for granted. I need to thank people for coming to Bible classes. Yes, they should do that, but still, letting them know that I appreciate that is valuable. What about the weekly bulletin? If it’s not there, we wonder why. But when it’s there, week after week, do we just take it for granted? What about all the other things that goes on in the congregation, or even in our homes? We have super team of men who run the videos, sound and recording. I have no idea what they do. But because of them, hundreds and hundreds of people listen to our lessons every week. Have I thanked them? And, what about home? Bills paid on time. Yard looks nice. Clothes washed. House is cleaned. Just the things a mom and dad does, but a “thank you,” sure puts a little pep and appreciation in what is being done.

I remember the Sundays when Trevor was going to be helping out with the Lord’s Supper and collection. I always hoped that he would be serving on my side. I wondered each time if he would say it, and he always did. “Thank you,” he’d say. And, I’d just smile.

Our passage says to give thanks in everything…everything. It’s hard to be thankful for tough times, trials or even what we are expected to do and supposed to do. But a teenager many years ago understood this. A simple “Thank you,” sure blessed my heart and I have never forgotten that.

What you do today, may well be remembered years from now by someone else. You may do something so little that you think nothing of it, but for another person, he may never forget it.

Thank you…how simple, yet, how powerful.

1 Corinthians 2:11 “For who among men knows the thoughts of a man expect the spirit of the man, which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God.”

People have been saying a expression for so long now that many not only believe it to be true, but some even assume that it’s in the Bible somewhere. The expression? “God wants me to be happy.” God wants me to be happy, even if it means disobeying His word. Being happy is believed to be the greatest achievement in life. Even in the fiber of this country is the “Pursuit of Happiness.” God wants me to be happy, which translates to, if I’m unhappy in my marriage, then I ought to walk away. And, when questioned why one does that, the answer is obvious, “God wants me to be happy.” If I find someone who makes me laugh more, I ought to be allowed to leave my marriage and marry that other person, because we all know, God wants me to be happy. Now, if going to worship services every week is just too demanding, and I find preaching not to my style, then I shouldn’t be required to attend, because we all know, God wants me to be happy. If hanging out with my friends on Friday nights, having a few drinks and being a little wild and crazy makes me happy, then it cannot be wrong. Because we all know, God wants me to be happy.

Just a few reminders here.

First, “God wants me to be happy,” is not a verse in the Bible. It’s simply not there. But the opposite isn’t better, God wants me to be miserable. What God wants is for you and I to follow Him. He wants us to trust Him. He wants us to love Him, worship Him, and allow Him to be the Lord of our lives. In so doing, we become the best that we can. This will make us holy and righteous, which the Bible DOES say. This will bring a peace within us, help us get along with us and give us a purpose and a compass in life. Happiness will result from a life that follows God but happiness is not the goal nor the destination. God is.

Second, since the Bible never says, “God wants me to be happy,” how do I know that God is not more interested in me being physically fit? Or, could it be that God wants me to be debt free? Or, could it be that God wants me to take a new job overseas? Or, could it be that God wants me to get a Master’s Degree? Or, could it be that God wants me to downsize? Or, could it be that God wants me to move my parents in with us? Or, could it be that God wants me to invest in gold? Or, could it be that God wants me to vote for Trump?

When we stick “God wants me to be…” on to anything it sounds divine. Who is going to argue with God? It seems that this is destined and this is the right thing to do. But could it be that we confuse what we want with what we think God wants. I want this, so in time that becomes, “God wants me to do this.” And, when God wants me to do something, there is no stopping that. We best do it because this is what God wants. So, it could be that I want to be happy and I translate that into God wants me to be happy. And sticking my face into a bowl of chocolate really makes me happy, so obviously, God wants me to stick my face into a bowl of chocolate. Does He? Naaman wanted to go dip in other rivers. He was told to go to the Jordan. He was angry about that. Cain offered God vegetables instead of a lamb. He must have thought “This is what I want to do and so, this is what God wants.” God rejected that offering. The text says, “He had no regard for it.” Jeroboam wanted the nation not to go to Jerusalem to worship. So, he established two alternative places. He must have thought that this will be just as good. God will like this. He didn’t. Aaron led the nation into building a golden calf and rewriting their history. The people seemed to love it. They were dancing and having a great time. I expect no one said, “Do we have to go to church?” It was incredible. It was awesome. It also violated several of the commandments that were in the hands of Moses. God didn’t approve, nor accept that worship.

All of this brings us to our verse today. No one knows the thoughts of a person except the spirit that is in him. We’d say, “Only you know what you are thinking. “ Now, we often, especially in a marriage, don’t go along with this. How often does one person say to the other, “I know what you are thinking?” Do you? You might guess right, but you really do not know. I think about this often when I’m preaching. I see people looking at me and I wonder are they with me or are they day dreaming, are their minds elsewhere? When a person nods his head in approval or says “Amen,” that lets me know, “that guy is on the same page with me.” But otherwise, I don’t know. I don’t know what you are thinking and you don’t know what I am thinking.

If you and I don’t know what others are thinking, how can we know what God is thinking? No one knows the thoughts of God expect the Spirit of God. The next verse Paul says, we have received the Spirit of God. In other words, God has shown us, told us, and revealed to us, what He is thinking. That’s the Bible. Without the Bible, you and I are guessing. And, this leads us back to, “God wants me to be happy.” How does a person know that? He doesn’t. He can’t. The only way he would know that is from the Bible. Without telling us in the Bible, we don’t know.

There is no telling where this could take a person if he started assuming what God likes. God likes the Dodgers more than the Reds, I could say. God likes Republicans more than Democrats. God likes Pepsi more than Coke. God likes Classical Music more than Pop music. God likes the Midwest better than the West Coast. God likes baseball more than football. God likes America more than Europe. God likes Chevy more than Ford. There is no end to this senseless guessing. I expect on many of those things I just listed, God really doesn’t care. God wants us to be holy, righteous and following Him. One can do that in Europe, Africa or America.

God wants me to be happy, has been a green light for many to ignore the teachings of the Bible and to do things that the Bible prohibits. They have put their happiness above all things. If anything, God wants me to make Him happy. The master of the five talent man was pleased when his servant did what he hoped. Paul said, “we make it our ambition to please the Lord.” That’s where the emphasis needs to be. What makes God happy? Finding the answer to that will lead me to the life that God wants me to live. Standing up for Him, put some in fiery furnaces, lion’s dens and dark prisons. Yet, their choices, their convictions, their faith, is what pleased the Lord. They may not have been personally happy, but their faith pleased the Lord.

Rather than saying, “God wants me to be happy,” we ought to be saying, “God wants me to please Him.” And, there is no way that I can please Him if I am violating and disobeying what He said in the Bible.

Our pursuit ought not to be of our happiness, but of His pleasure. There is a difference.

Romans 13:1 Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God.

Yesterday in our Jump Start we discussed the subject of changing gender. In that article, I made the point that certain things belong only to God and no one has the right to assume those privileges. No one has the right unless God gives them that right.

I want to stretch those ideas and thoughts more. There is a change of command that we find in the Bible. At the top is God. He has all authority. This is what our verse today is declaring, “there is no authority except from God.” Why does God have all authority? Because He is the Creator and the Almighty. His position, His power, and His works, demonstrate that He has all authority. All other authorities exist lawfully because God gave those right to others.

For instance, with Jesus Christ, we remember in Matthew, “All authority has been given to Me in Heaven and on Earth” (28:18). Who gave Jesus that authority? The Father did. Upon the ascension into Heaven, Jesus sat down at the right hand of His Father. Jesus came to fulfill the will of His Father. He spoke the words of His Father. His authority was given to Him.

Our verse today leads into a discussion about the government. God gave authority to government. “Rulers are a minister of God, an avenger who brings wrath upon the one who practices evil” (13:4). The government has the right to make laws, raise taxes, enforce those laws and even take life for violating those laws. What right does the Government have to execute a criminal, some ask? They have the right of God. God granted them that right. We pay taxes, this text tells us, because, rulers are servants of God (13:6). God gave the government certain authority.

The apostles were given the right to bind and loose the laws of God which created in Heaven (Mt 16:19). They were not making the rules as they went along. They did not have that right. But as directed by Heaven, they had the authority and the right to tell churches and brethren what they had to do. Who gave the apostles that right? God did.

God gave congregations the right to discipline members who were not walking faithfully with Him. The church can rebuke, remove and even with hold fellowship from members who are not following the N.T. pattern. What right does a church have to do this? God gave them that right. Passages such as 1 Corinthians 5 and 2 Thessalonians 3 show that. What God did not hand over to a church was the right to change the Bible. There is no voting on what a church should do. There is no additions, by-laws or decrees that the church can add to the Bible. The church was never given that right.

God gave preachers the right to preach the word. They have the right to rebuke and show the Biblical pattern as they teach God’s word. God did not give preachers the right to run the church, or to be the final answer in all things. Some act this way, but God did not give them that right.

So, there is a Biblical chain of command. When one operates where he does not have permission or the right then that person is in the wrong. He is doing things without Heaven’s approval. Although he may get away with things for the moment, it does not mean that God likes what he is doing. So the issue of changing genders is a matter of chain of command. Does God give the individual the permission to change their gender? If the answer is yes, it would be found in the Scriptures. That is yet another link in God’s chain of command. His word, the Bible is His voice and His authority. The Colossians were told to do all things in the name of Jesus. The Bereans were called noble because they searched the Scriptures daily to see if things were so. When questioned about divorce, Jesus referred to the Bible. When asked about marriage in Heaven, Jesus referred to the Bible. In these last days, Hebrews says, God speaks through His Son. So, if some right has been given to us, it will be found in the Bible. Changing your gender is not in the Bible. Same sex marriage is not in the Bible. A church voting on what is right or wrong is not in the Bible. A church being organized with a hierarchy larger than a local congregation is not in the Bible. Not being in the Bible means those rights have not been given to us.

We understand the chain of command in the military. Someone who jumps the gun and starts barking out orders who doesn’t have that permission will find himself in all sorts of hot water and trouble. Should it be any different with God?

A chain of command…do you understand it? Do you respect it? Many questions of today would be quickly settled if we started with the concept of God’s authority and the chain of command. The Bible is not a democracy. The church is not a democracy. The will of the people does not surpass the will of God. Jesus prayed, not My will, but Thy will be done.

A chain of command…respect it, follow it, understand it.

Genesis 1:27 “God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”

A friend called the other day wanting some advice. He was getting ready to have a conversation and a Bible study with a young man who now claimed to be a woman. His question to me was, “Do I call him by his male name or his female name?”

We are travelling down some treacherous waters these days. School teachers are forced to refer to students by the gender of their choice, not their birth. Churches are now having to address topics that they never have before. A boy is dating a boy, yet, the boy he is dating, claims to be a girl. Is that ok? There was a time, not too long ago, when people sitting down with elders to discuss placing membership within a congregation were asked about their marriage and whether they had been divorced and if so for what reasons. That was common. Now, it’s coming to a place where elders may have to start asking a couple what their gender was at birth. Boys are wanting to be girls and girls are wanting to be boys. It’s definitely a mixed up, crazy world as the Kinks sang about a long time ago.

But in all of these discussions about gender identity and changing gender, there seems to be one assumption that is overlooked. I’ve read where some claim that they are a female trapped in a male body. So, their entire life is a journey to escape from that and be who they were truly meant to be. Some have even been so bold as to say that God made a mistake. Does God ever make mistakes?

The assumption that these discussions often begin with is that a person has the right to be what they want to be. They have the right to be happy. If a person is unhappy as a male, then they ought to be able to change and become a female. But, where is it proven that a person has a right to be what they want to be? Gender identity strikes at the authority of God. There are certain privileges and rights that belong to God and God alone. To assume that we can usurp these rights is without Biblical precepts. In essence, we are dong what we have no right to do. We understand this in other aspects of life. The President of the United States can’t make laws. He can sign laws or veto laws, but he himself does not have the positon nor the right to do that. Bills are made through the legislature and they become laws when he signs them. He is without authority or right to make laws on his own. Unless you are the owner of your company, you cannot determine on your own what the company policy will be. There is a process and many people that form policies. A member, including the preacher, or the elders, can determine what a church will believe and practice. God has already determined that in the Bible. It is not within our rights to decide what we will believe or what we won’t. When driving, I cannot determine whether a red light applies to me or not. Now, I can run a red light, and, I might get away with it. But I could also cause an accident and I’d be at fault or I could be pulled over by the police and be given a ticket. I cannot justify running the red light by declaring, “I decided that red does not mean stop.” Not only will that not fly in a court of law, but it might be determined that I shouldn’t be driving at all.

Only the person with the authority has the right to set forth what is allowed. When it comes to determining our gender, no where in the Scriptures do we find God passing that right on to us. He did not give that right to prophets, kings or apostles. Some things belong solely to God. To take that right is to steal from God. If I took my doctor’s prescription and started writing prescriptions that would be wrong, illegal and dangerous. I do not have that right. Even though I could pretty much guess what the doctor would write, I do not have the authority to do that. Gender identity, worship, Bible doctrine, marriage are a few items that belong strictly with God. We must take our hands off of them and stop trying to adjust, change and restructure these things. They belong to God and God alone.

Especially, with gender identity, God has made it such that it cannot be changed. Sure a man can have an operation to change body parts, wear makeup, dress like a girl, change his name and tell others that he is a female, but what he cannot do is change his chromosomes. That is set at birth. God determines that. A person can try to change the outside of the package all they want, but what God has set on the inside cannot be altered.

The gender identity issue is just the latest in a long, long history of man robbing from God. Modern worship doesn’t look anything like you read about in the Bible. Who gave these church leaders the right to change what God has given us? The organization of most modern churches doesn’t model the N.T. pattern at all. So many look like corporate America. Who gave those folks the right to change what God set forth? Abortion rights. Same sex marriage rights. Now, gender equality rights. This is nothing more than a long stream of people stealing from God and getting away with it.

Years ago a group of teenagers took down a stop sign at an intersection as a prank. There was a car accident, because there was no stop sign. Someone was killed. The teens were caught, arrested and went to prison. It was not their right to remove a sign that said stop. Who gives us the right to remove God’s sign that says, “Stop”? No one. We just did it. And, the result is spiritual crashes over and over again.

Let God be God. There are some things that are off limits to us. Picking the forbidden fruit seems like fun, but it always results with someone getting harmed. Genesis says, “God made them male and female.” He did not say, “Who wants to be the boy and who wants to be the girl?” Nor did He say, “If you don’t like things the way they are, you can always change them.”

Male and female—He made them that way on purpose. Let God be God.

Romans 1:20 “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.”

It’s finally fall here in Indiana. The air is cool and the leaves are turning colors and falling to the ground. This year the dominate color seems to be orange. Lots of orange leaves set against a bright blue sky—that’s a scene that only God can make.

Our verse today reminds us of the abundant evidence of God in creation. This is not something new this year. “Since the creation,” is how the verse opens. Every year. Every season. God is showing splendor, beauty, order and power. Our verse continues with, “have been clearly seen,” and ends with, “they are without excuse.” For a guy to say, “I don’t know if there is a God,” he needs to turn off the TV and stick his head outside and look around. We drive by divine evidence all the time. It’s everywhere. It’s in your own backyard.

And, here is what is so shocking. More and more people are getting caught up in the hype about flying sauces and aliens than in the visible evidence for God. Reports come in almost daily now. The Air Force, we are told, has undisputed proof of flying saucers. NASA, another news report claims, has evidence of aliens. Possible life on Mars, we are told. However, this evidence is sketchy, and withheld from the public. Yet, that doesn’t stop the masses from believing that it’s all true. There are getting to be more people who believe in aliens than they do God. Yet, the evidence for God is right there in their backyards. When they go and rake leaves, they are gathering visible and tangible proof of God.

And, what does this divine evidence show us? Take away all the man-made things, such as roads, cities, buildings, fences, billboards, and bridges, and just look at rolling hills, sunsets, oceans, mountains, falling leaves, blue skies, song birds, and what do you see?

First, there is a lot of colors. I think God has more than 64 crayons in His divine box. There isn’t just green. There are shades and shades of green. God mixes colors. A leaf may have traces of green in it, yet have lots of yellow and just a touch of red on the edges. It would take an artist a long time to come up with that, and that’s just one leaf. There are millions of leaves, and that’s just in my back yard. In botany class, they explain why a leaf turns color. There’s science behind it. For the common guy, realizing a wet spring and a very hot September, and the colors turn out the way they do. How boring it would all be if everything was merely black and white. Colors bring excitement, enhancement and joy. Each sports team has their own colors. Every bride spends a long time picking out the right colors for her wedding. And, God has been using colors since Eden.

What does color do with God? First, God is not all one way. He is not only love, but He is just. He is not only merciful, but He can be angered and brings punishment. We tend to want to paint God with just one color. Fear Him only is how some would color God. You best obey Him or else you’ll get it. But in coloring God this way, you’ve left out His kindness, compassion and grace. Many think that’s God’s best color. But God is also the Almighty. His will is accomplished. His law is to be obeyed. His way is the best way. But then there is God who heals the broken and hears the downcast. He’s tender to the contrite heart. God is vast and we can’t just color Him one way.

Leaves also start off small and green. By the fall, they are large, weathered and turning color and eventually, they fall, much like we do. In a season, we see with the leaves, what happens to us. This world is not our home, we sing. Winter comes and everything looks barren and dead. Spring rolls around and somehow everything bursts with life, color and activity. The bees come out. The butterflies flutter around. The flowers open up. And, the outdoors is full of all kinds of colors. Much like us, our time here will end. It will look like we are gone. Empty, barren and cold seems the long winter months. But a resurrection day comes and we will burst forth alive, new and in the presence of God. Isn’t God showing us these lessons every year?

This all comes from just the color of leaves. What about the sounds? Not car horns, radios, and people talking. Not traffic, air planes and bustle of keyboards, phone calls and those things. But God’s sounds. The sound of the wind blowing through trees. The sound of birds singing in the morning. The sound of a river. The sound of waves crashing in. The sound of snow melting and falling. The sound of animals late at night. The roar of thunder, the gentle falling of rain, falling rocks, and even silence. Just as colors point to God, so do sounds. God must like music, just listen to song birds.

Then there is texture. Thorn bushes. Velvet leaves. Soft grass. Sharp rocks. Cool water. The tough skin of a horse. The soft hair of a kitten. A feather tickles your skin. Stepping on a rock hurts your bare feet. Even in our foods, there are a variety of textures. Steak does not have the same texture as cotton candy, or the coolness of ice cream, or the softness of a glass of water. All these different textures, and like colors, like sounds, they point to God.

Then there are smells. The smell of a red rose. The smell of leaves that have fallen. The smell of smoke. The smell of something sweet. The smell of something dead. So many different smells in nature and they all point to God.

Then there is light. Sunlight. Moon light. Star light. Dawn. Sunset. Lightning. Fireflies. There are times when the moon looks orange. Later, it looks white. The sky takes on different colors as light hits it. Lakes and ponds reflect different lights and colors. All of these point to God.

Then there are the created animals. So many different kinds of bugs. There are crunchy bugs, flying bugs, little bugs and big bugs. There are bugs that sting and bugs that stink. Then birds. Then ants. Then frogs and toads. Then snakes, yes, even though I hate them, they make the list. Each unique. Each having different purposes. Each having their own color, sounds and textures. And, they point to God.

Do you see what we have done? Layers and layers of evidence for God. Each of these have their own special study in science. But all of them pointing to God. A creative God. A good God. A God of order. A God of uniqueness. A God of love. A God of resurrection. A God that wants to be known, followed, trusted and loved. God hasn’t hidden Himself. He is not playing hide ‘n seek. Look around. His thumbprints are everywhere, even upon your heart.

We walk all over the evidence of God each day and yet our culture would rather believe in aliens, of which there is no real proof, and of which they have done nothing for us, rather than a God who has loved us, blessed us, and pulled back the curtain to show that He is right here with us.

As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. The reasons are obvious. Lift up your eyes and behold…
